Yeah, there needs to be a pragmatic balance. A lot of newer buildings ignore basic pragmatism too. So many apartment blocks that the architect thought "Yeah this is great" without thinking the high level of maintenance needed to stop it looking shit within 15 years. Huge wood or aluminium panels all over the outsides that the sun fades to fuck very quickly, glass features that require a lot of expense and specialised equipment to keep from looking absolutely disgusting. That's without the shite standard in the workmanship and materials of so many modern buildings. The one I work in is only about 15 years old and it's falling asunder and the layout design was an absolute joke from day 1. The flats I grew up in and where my mother still lives were built in 1940 by the corporation. They've obviously gotten a sprucing up from time to time but over 80 years later the building standards and architecture still holds its own. Anybody whos travelled on the Luas to James' Hospital will know what they look like. Theyre just on the left before it turns into the hospital. A bit off topic this but I think its interesting. Designed by a man called Herbert Simms, he included air raid shelters because it was war time and open air balconies that mattresses could be layed out on because TB was rampant and his use of space was extremely clever. Some things never change though. When a colleague in a similarly high position retired, rather than replace him they just dumped all the work on Simms. It was the start of trying to empty the tenements so there was a huge workload. He couldn't handle the pressure and threw himself under a train in Dun Laoghaire. Tragic really, he was a man who genuinely cared about making people's lives better.
Three castles burning give Herbert Simms many mentions. There's a plaque to him going up outside the GAA club in Cabra over the coming weeks.
I've started listening to that podcast. It's brilliant. I'd read about Simms before but I've listened to a few where he's mentioned.
"You're better off on the dole than working in this country" Well give up your job and live that great life then......or shut the fuck up you melt.
I had an extended family member post this today on social media. After spending a couple of years working abroad and not paying tax here anyway.
Pizza police who try tell others what they can have on theirs etc I say this as someone that isn't into pizza Yiz are cunts and get on my tits.
Pizza is the best food ever invented. If I had to live solely on one food, that's what I'd pick. I like pineapple on a pizza, but that's one of those toppings that gets people going. So I agree with you Gerry, fuck the pizza police. Except when it comes to Swedes. Those dirty bastards put banana on their pizzas.
If you like pizza and get a chance at some stage in your life, drizzle some hot honey over it. It’s beautiful . It’s about €8 a jar in certain places . Well worth it though .
Hahaha I’ve got a pizza oven at home that cooks them in about 2-3 minutes and some of the stuff which goes on them would drive the pizza police mad. The missus likes oranges and pineapples on hers . Doesn’t bother me in the slightest , but it would drive some people mad.
The fact that people have just neglected the correct spelling of some words. "I'm in the que" sometimes I've even seen "cue" And the one I've been seeing the most lately. "I'll send a check", "Did you collect a check?" Come on people. It's queue and cheque. Why are we not spelling these correctly anymore.
Rules !!!!! I’ve a little fella a 5yr old who has just started school. A good little boy with good manners etc . He gets on with everyone etc (opposite of his younger side ). So he plays football in the yard most days with the lads from his class. Picked him up today and asked how school was . He said it was grand bar a boy from his class hit him in the yard today while playing football. He said he punched him in the stomach. So I asked my little fella what he done and he said he told the teacher , and they told him to play on and the other boy didn’t say sorry . So I said to him the next time he hits you smack him one back. Now he is a sensible child and he said Mammy said not to do that (she’s a teacher ) and she is probably right . But Jesus back in our day we would smack the other fella back and that would be the end of it, where as if I tell him to do that , he will get in trouble , but when he leaves it to the teachers nothing is done . Parenting ehhh !!
People with no sense of space or being in a busy place. We were in Blanchardstown Shopping centre earlier and it was packed, as you'd expect. The amount of people that randomly stop in front of you or block an aisle then get offended at being asked to move (politely). We all just want to get in and out of these places when its busy surely a bit of cop on would make it easier on us all.
I've always said people should have lights on their backs. If you done it on the road thered be he'll to pay
