Fine Gael getting fully into election mode now and playing to their base. It says a previous strategy saved 2 and a half billion over 4 years that they would have paid out had measures not been in place. I'd love to know how they come up with that figure because as good as Leo is at spinning, "We saved this by only paying people who were entitled to money" is a hard sell. But wait until I tell my missus I saved 100 euros today by not buying her a birthday present. It's not her birthday but just because I'd no reason to buy her a present doesn't mean I didn't save money by not buying her one. Hopefully somebody has checked on Niall Boylan to see he hasn't drowned in his own cum after seeing social welfare back in the news. It was getting tricky making every single conversation on his show about it.

Does anyone know what all of the violence and hatred against the Quinn owners is about? I've read quite a bit about it this morning but nobody seems to be directly saying what the reasons are. Are there just people who were staunch supporters of Quinn who are out for vengeance?

I actually came in here to ask the same thing.
I figured I missed some previous story about it.
    Shocking stuff.

I was also thinking there was a glaring gap in the reporting on the motivation for these crimes. I have nothing to base this on other than reading between the lines but imagine there is more to it than vigilante locals. I suspect there is some element of organised crime/provos who were cut out of the equation as a result of the takeover - protection money/certain jobs no longer being given to certain businesses. Could be way off the mark but the part of the country we are talking about, it is possible.

Said it to the girl beside me in work here today but same as you just as pure speculation that Q&inn must have been lining the pockets of some organisation that are no longer happy as the new organisation are refusing to engage with them in the same way, I just can't see any other motive for such a horrendous crime against a man who is doing nothing other than his job. It really is a bizarre story to be honest, could you imagine something like that happening to one of the big multinationals, the sentiment that it would send to other organisations thinking of locating in Ireland, certainly in the border communities would be shocking.

A guy was stabbed inside the RDS today apparently at an event for secondary school kids. Shocking stuff altogether, the media reports are very sketchy on details considering it happened in a packed hall but it's probably as all involved are under 18 or something.

Thomas Cook gone bust with over 600k people stranded abroad from across Europe, 150k of them alone are British. This is a seismic shock to the travel industry having someone of this scale going out of business. Leasing companies are going to be trying to flog over 100 aircraft on the market too once they're recovered from Thomas Cook.

UK Supreme Court has declared Boris Johnson's prorogation of parliament unlawful. Highest court in the land. Maybe he should appeal to Europe.... o_O

Absolutely amazed that this story has not been featured in the southern media as far as I am aware. Looked on the Independent's website and also Irish Times earlier. Certainly was not on the 6 0'clock news on RTE. Not ever day you hear of 'a man of god' admitting to supporting terrorism.

That's their jobs gone and you'd imagine the lad will press charges.
